Hi friends
About 5 years ago we had an e-mail special on a wine from Yecla, Spain. It had gotten 90 points from Parker and we were able to secure it and sell it for a song. You folks loved it, it sold out immediately, and then we were able to get a little more. The next drop sold out soon thereafter, and that was basically all she wrote. It was a great deal and we took advantage of it.
I’ve followed the wine throughout the years (actually going to Yecla and visiting the winery), and have always been trying to get a price on it. The importer and wholesaler have never budged though, probably because they felt that it was worth more than the price that they were charging, so why give it away?
Cut to last summer. I went to a major tasting of Spanish wines in New York City and in the middle of about 100 wines they passed around a bottle in a brown bag. This wine had a new package and they wanted everyone to taste it without knowing what it was. I put my nose in the glass, took a sip, and immediately recognized the wine I had been following for all these years. It was Carro from Yecla.
Carro is made from vines over 60 years old, from organically farmed grapes, from vines that are over 60 years old. Made using Rhone varietals, Carro is done completely in stainless steel. This wine offers extremely high-quality at a really low price.
Carro 2010
Yecla, Spain
Tasting notes: 50% Monastrell, 35% Syrah, 8% Tempranillo, 7% Merlot. 14% alcohol. Black/Purple color. The nose of this wine explodes with blackberry, blueberry, black cherry, violets, forest floor, kirsch, smoke, grilled meats, chili powder, cassis, and tobacco. On the palate this wine is medium to full bodied, with a warm and spicy texture. Seriously though, this wine is all about the earthy component evident in the mid-palate. The monastrell in the blend turns what would be an ordinary wine into a sultry beast. The finish is spicy and long, with firm tannins.
What would we eat with this? Try burgers, ribs, lamb, barbecue food, steak tips, etc. At this price we can afford to experiment.
And what kind of price are we talking about? It sells for $9.99 on the shelf, but you know I wouldn’t be sending you this if that was all I could offer. E-mail me back and I can sell you a 6 pack for $50.00 or A FULL CASE OF 12 FOR JUST $90.00!
This is a ridiculous bargain! Back up the trucks!
Cheers,
Ken
